Here are the top 4 stories today in Manchester:
- Don't fish or swim in Crystal Lake. Crystal is closed due to high levels of E. coli bacteria, the Manchester Health Department announced on their website. Crystal Lake public beach will also remain closed. When unacceptably high levels of toxic bacteria are detected, swimming and fishing are not allowed. High bacteria levels were identified in routine water samples taken on Monday, Aug. 8, Tuesday, Aug. 9, and Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2022. Weekly water sample results are available here: (Manchester NH.gov)
- A shout out to Riley McNamara of Manchester, and Anna Carbone and William Karantonis of Salem, who will each receive a $5,000 scholarship from Hampton, N.H.-based Planet Fitness. The scholarship was awarded to those who promote "a kinder and more inclusive world." In partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Planet Fitness awarded $250,000 in scholarships this year. The scholarship was awarded "based on a personal essay, staff recommendation, and video submission, all representing how they demonstrate and perpetuate values of kindness, acceptance and respect." Way to go, Riley, Anna and William! (Planet Fitness)
- If you're looking for a fun arts and cultural experience this weekend, check out the Manchester International Film Festival at The Rex Theatre from Aug. 12-14. See popular films you know, and must-see-films by new filmmakers, including the Red Carpet premier of David Seth Cohen's documentary about his quest to find Adam Sandler. You can buy a daily pass ticket, and find the full schedule of this weekend’s films and events here. (The Palace Theatre)
- Manchester will receive $2M in federal grant money to help end youth homelessness. The New Hampshire was selected to receive a $2M in federal grant money by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant funds will support new and existing housing programs and organizations that are "the first point of contact for young people seeking services." The grant became a reality thanks to the Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with New Hampshire’s Youth Success Project. (Manchester Ink Link)
