Here are the 4 top stories in Manchester today:
- Manchester residents are "urged to take precautions" as temperatures soar with high heat and humidity, with no end in sight at least until Monday. Emergency management officials are urging residents in need of relief from the heat to visit one of the city's "cooling centers" at the Mall of New Hampshire, Livingston Pool in Manchester, the City Library, and several other centers in the area. (WMUR)
- Police responded to a report of an unresponsive man near the railroad tracks by the Merrimack River, only a few hundred yards from Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester. Police, firefighters, and AMR responded to find a deceased man in the brush along the railroad tracks directly behind 300 Elm St. on Sunday. The popular stadium, home to the Fisher Cats baseball team, is near a camp where many homeless people live. Other bodies have been found near Delta Dental Stadium in the past. (Patch)
- New Hampshire has hit a "record low" unemployment, with the state's unemployment rate at 2 percent. That's down from 16.2 percent unemployment during the height of the pandemic— and it's the lowest unemployment rate in the state's 46 years of record-keeping. It signals that the labor market in the state is strong, said Brian Gottlob, director of the state Economic and Labor Market Information Bureau, adding he expects the trend to continue. Warren Jennings, general manager at fuel supplier Dead River Co., said he thought in the short term, hiring will continue to be challenging. He wasn't recruiting workers when he said he recently found a new employee in Bedford. How did it happen? He met the young man at the gym where he works out," and now he (now) works here,” he said. - A shout out to the Thirsty Moose Taphouse in Manchester for "hiring" another rescue pet from The Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire. The Thirsty Moose is one of many area businesses that have "hired" pets to help them find a loving home.
