  1. Juneteenth, celebrated Sunday, is not just about The Emancipation Proclamation, which freed people from slavery when it was signed by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, on Jan. 1, 1863. But the Proclamation did not mean that all slaves were free, especially in states like Texas, that resisted the change as the Union Army advanced, explained Angela Thorpe, Director of the NC African American Heritage Commission, in his episode of Clarified. General Order No. 3, signed on June 19, 1865, "finally informs enslaved people in Texas they are free." You can read more about this story here: (WMUR)
  2. A new buyback program of banned lead fishing tackle was announced by the Loon Preservation Committee. It's an urgent effort to protect New Hampshire's loons "from being poisoned by lead fishing tackle." Lead "sinkers" and "jigs" are toxic to birds. explained John Cooley, a biologist with the Loon Preservation Committee." There are only about 300 pairs of loons living in the Granite State," Cooley said. He added if a loon ingests lead tackle will cause lead poisoning, "and as far as we know," he said, "it will kill it within two to four weeks." Tackle shops throughout the state are participating in the buyback program. v
