Here are the top stories today in Manchester:
- Residents in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire were startled by an earthquake around midnight last night. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 2.2. magnitude quake that could be felt as far away as Tuftonboro. People described rattling and shaking, while some said they heard a loud noise that "sounded like an explosion" around 12 a.m. WMUR News 9 reached out to the Wolfeboro Police Department for reports of damage, but at the time there was no information available. - A shout out to photographer Gary Samson, who will receive an Individual Achievement Award at the 30th Annual Historic Preservation Awards by The Manchester Historic Association (MHA). Samson is one of five honorees. The Historic Preservation Awards program "recognizes and supports the efforts of individuals, businesses and organizations that have made significant contributions to the preservation of buildings, neighborhoods, traditions and other historic resources in the Queen City." The event will be held on Sept. 8 at Manchester Community College. You can find out more here: (Manchester Ink Link)
- What happens when there is no local news or community reporting? Lauren McKown of Report for America, an organization that provides funding for reporters to cover pressing issues and missing areas of local coverage, said that "just 17 percent of what’s in a local newspaper is local news. The rest is wire and national reports." McKown explained that almost 36,000 reporters lost their jobs during COVID-19, and the hardest hit outlets were in rural communities. Local news is essential to distribute information critical to policy, spending, health, education, equity, justice and understanding of climate change, McKown noted, "It’s not about saving local news outlets. It’s about saving the connections that news fosters" and about being able to "connect communities to find solutions together." You can read the full story here: (Manchester Ink Link)
