Here are the top stories in Manchester today:

  1. A late-night kitchen fire at Mint Bistro on Elm Street Monday night temporarily shut down operations. The fire department received an alarm for 1105 Elm St. at 10:27 p.m., said Manchester Fire Battalion Chief Robert Beaudet. They saw black smoke when they entered the building and called for additional engines. Firefighter first responders quickly knocked down the blaze with a hand fire extinguisher. Mint is normally closed Mondays. The last person in the building, who was doing some cleaning, left the building at 3:30 p.m. You can read the full story here: (Manchester Ink Link)
  2. Arbor Day is an entire day dedicated to trees, and the last week in April is Forest Conservation Week, said officials on the UNH Extension website. Many people think of Arbor Day as a tree planting holiday, but it's better to think of it as a 'tree caring' holiday, they said. Arbor Day is on April 29. The first Arbor Day in the state was proclaimed by Gov. Moody Currier on April 29, 1886. Moody "advocated for reforestation of waste and cutover lands and encouraged planting shade and ornamental trees and shrubs around homes, along highways, and other public places." 3. Eversource said they are celebrating Arbor Day by supporting local tree planting events and raising awareness about 'planting the right tree in the right place,' and not planting certain trees near power lines. From now until May, Eversource’s team of arborists will be participating in Earth and Arbor Day events at The New Hampshire State Forest Nursery in Boscawen on April 28; at the Wilton Police Station and Cooley Park, and Pinkerton Academy and on April 29; and at Mt. Pleasant School in Nashua on May 3. Find out more about Eversource’s vegetation management program here: (Eversource)
