Here are the top stories today in Manchester:
- What a game! A shout out to Fisher Cats pitcher Sem Robberse, who had a "career-high" nine strikeouts at Saturday night's game. The Fisher Cats defeated the Harrisburg Senators 5-1 at Delta dental Stadium, winning the series. Sem, 20, who is from the Netherland, pitched a nearly perfect game, giving up only three hits in the first two innings. He walked one batter and struck out nine, "the most ever in a game in his three-year professional career." (Manchester Ink Link)
- Concerned about high fuel bills this winter? Help is on the way. Moderate income families qualify for state money to help pay fuel bills this winter. Leaders in both parties approved a bill to use the state's $42 million budget surplus for fuel assistance. The fuel assistance program limit for a family of four was $72,000 and is now $90,000 for the same family. Residents can apply for the state fuel assistance benefit through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) program. (Subscription/The Union Leader)
- What will happen to the embattled Sununu Youth Services Center? Officials set a mandatory March 1 deadline to close the North Manchester youth detention facility, named for former Governor John H. Sununu. Police were called several times this year for disturbances, and last year, 11 former staff members were charged with sexual assault after a criminal investigation. Lawmakers said they are also frustrated by the $13 million a year cost to run the 144-bed facility for about a dozen teens. But with no plan in place for March 1, officials said the teens and community are at risk. Rep. Jess Edwards, R-Auburn, plans to introduce two bills in January: one to extend the deadline by three months, and another bill for a new facility. (WMUR)
