Here are the top stories today in Manchester:
- If you look up in the New Hampshire sky around 10:27 p.m. on Sunday, you may catch the lunar eclipse. The earth's shadow will pass in front of the May full moon over the course of 84 minutes, and at one point will completely darken the moon's surface. During the eclipse, the moon will go from gray to pink to orange to red — also called a "blood moon." This full moon is also a "super" moon, which means the moon is closer to the earth than usual, making it appear much larger. Unlike a solar eclipse, you can look directly at a lunar eclipse, according to NASA. A telescope may help you see it even better! According to Space.com, there will be a second lunar eclipse on Nov. 8, 2022. (WMUR)
- Congratulations to Dr. Jenn Gillis, who has been appointed superintendent of the Manchester School District. Gillis had been serving as the district’s interim superintendent since Feb. 14, after Superintendent John Goldhardt resigned. “Since taking on the role of interim superintendent, she has proven herself to be a coalition builder," said Mayor Joyce Craig, adding that she has the trust of students, staff and parents. " I look forward to continuing to work with her,” said Craig in a statement. Gillis thanked the Board of School Committee and said she is "thrilled to be able to continue to serve our community. We have a lot of important work ahead of us." (Subscription / The Union Leader)
- If you were thinking about hiking the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire this weekend, you may have to come up with an alternate route due to a wildfire that continues to burn in the White Mountains. On Wednesday, The U.S. Forest Service closed sections of the trail due to the wildfire burning on the north and east sides of Mount Hayes. The blaze has already scorched 45 acres as of Wednesday. Alan Smith of the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands said 28 firefighters from local, state and federal agencies are fighting what is now called the Centennial Fire. Wildfires happen throughout New Hampshire every spring, Smith said, “but it seems there’s more of them.” You can read more here: (Subscription / The Union Leader)
