Here are the top stories in Manchester today:
- This is something you don't see every day in Manchester: a young black bear sitting on a branch at Bronstein Park on Hanover Street. Manchester Police arrived after receiving reports of a small bear on a tree branch at about 8 a.m. Saturday. He climbed the tree after he was spotted "walking through streets in downtown Manchester." Officers kept people away to protect the young bear from becoming more nervous. Fish and Game Conservation officers and a bear biologist tranquilized the bear with a dart after placing a cushioned mat under the tree. Lt. Adam Cheney of New Hampshire Fish and Game said the 1 1/2-year-old bear was taken to Ben Killham, a bear rehabber in Lyme, and will be released in 15 days, after the tranquilizers wear off. - A beautiful new public garden will be a memorial to Brigit Feeney. A large granite stone was hoisted into place in Livingston Park as construction begins on a public garden that will honor Brigit Feeney, a victim-witness advocate who was killed in a motorcycle accident last year in Manchester. The garden will be filled with thousands of perennial flowers and dozens of trees, so that "the public and advocates and victims of crime will visit the garden and draw strength from Brigit’s example of courage and compassion,” according to the Brigit A. Feeney Foundation for Hope and Healing. (Subscription/The Union Leader)
- Bystanders helped a woman after her car veered off Interstate 293 South, hit a tree, and burst into flames on Sunday. Manchester firefighters, AMR ambulance, and New Hampshire State Police arrived at the rollover crash just before 11 a.m. Sunday morning to find the single occupant of the burning 2010 Subaru being treated by bystanders away from the crash scene. State police said the driver was Laura Ann Archambault, 43, of Hooksett. (Manchester Patch)
