The recent murder of 9-year-old Amherst resident Joshua Savyon, carried out, police say, by his father Muni Savyon, has rekindled a debate about the best way to handle custody agreements in the state, according to an article in the Union Leader.
Muni Savyon reportedly shot and killed is son Joshua and then himself inside the YWCA in Manchester during a supervised visit on Aug. 11.
The incident has had people talking about what went wrong and how it could have been prevented and one lawmaker from Plaistow says his goal is to see a change in the parental rights and custody system in New Hampshire.
State Rep. Jeff Oligny, R-Plaistow, filed 13 bills last session related to parental rights and custody agreements and among them was a bill that would require state licensing at supervision places like the one Joshua was killed at, and one that focuses on joint parenting. All 13 bills were found inexpedient to legislate.
But there are others in the state, the Union Leader reports, who say ideas like joint parenting isn't a concept that works for everyone and the court needs to step in to focus on what's best for the child.
