8 Displaced by Amherst Street Fire

The blaze appears to have started on the first floor and spread to the second floor and attic.

Firefighters responded to a working fire on Amherst Street on Wednesday night.

The call came in shortly before 6 p.m. for a working fire at 24 Amherst St., according to emergency radio broadcasts. Smoke was reportedly showing from a commercial, store-type structure. The fire was declared under control around 6:50 p.m.

According to a Nashua Fire Department press release, when they arrived at the scene there was heavy fire in a first floor apartment of the 2-1/2 story wood frame building. Firefighters attacked the fire on the first floor, but it followed void spaces in the wall and spread from the first floor to the attic. The deep snow made access to utilities and properly accessing the building difficult.

Approximately eight people were displaced by the fire but were provided with alternate lodging by the building's owner. No one was injured.

The first floor of the building also houses Jay's Amherst Market, a convenience store located near the Amherst Street fire station.

Hudson, Hollis, Merrimack and Tyngsborough, MA fire departments all provided station coverage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Nashua Fire Marshal's Office.
