After Tough Year, Local TV Station Takes Home Big Award

Although their signal was yanked from Comcast this year, WCYN was honored for excellence at the annual Granite Mikes Awards.

WYCN tv13 Nashua took first place in the Public Affairs category at the NH Association of Broadcasters’ (NHAB) annual Granite Mikes Awards held Oct. 17, 2013 at the Manchester Country Club.  The station won for its submission of a 5 minute segment on the Sculpture Symposium held in Nashua last spring.

Given to a “program of issues of interest to the community with a local host,” Carolyn Choate, long-time host of “Main Street,” accepted the award.

“Considering what the station has been through over the past several years, I am both proud and honored and certainly gratified by this award,” says Choate.  “To be recognized by my peers for doing what I love most, producing local affairs programming, there’s nothing sweeter.”

Choate was referring to a protracted negotiation process between WCYN and Comcast over the summer that resulted in their signal being dropped from the Comcast lineup.

In addition, Choate and station manager, Gordon Jackson, were recognized by the NHAB for 25 years of service to the NH broadcast community.

WYCN tv13 Nashua was purchased by OTA Broadcasting Inc. in May at which time the company maintained Choate and her husband/business partner, Gordon Jackson, to restore the station’s local programming content.  The couple began managing and producing for the station in 1988.

Local viewers will soon enjoy WYCN tv13 Nashua’s high definition signal.

Also recognized at this year's awards, George Russell, who received a Merit Award in the Air Personality category for his daily Nashua This Morning show on WSMN-AM 1590.

WMUR's Fritz Wetherbee was named Broadcaster of the Year. You can read more about the awards on the NH Association of Broadcasters Facebook page.
