Driver in Fatal Hit and Run Told Police She Had Been Drinking

Cara Smith is charged with conduct after an accident.

The Union Leader is reporting that the woman charged with hitting and killing a homeless man with her car on Feb. 23 had been drinking on the night of the accident.

According to a court affidavit obtained by the newspaper, Cara Smith told police she had five alcoholic drinks with dinner on the night of the crash. She said she felt a thump but didn't see anything and continued on her way.

Robert Derome, 63, of Nashua was later found unresponsive on the side of the road. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead
