NASHUA, NH — Baraka Janvier, accused of an armed robbery of a postal carrier in Nashua, appeared in court via video Thursday.

Nashua District Court Judge John Curran, prosecutor Bret Harpster, and Janvier’s public defender communicated with Janvier through a Swahili interpreter, his native language.

The public defender representing Janvier, 18, of Lowell, Massachusetts, asked Curran to be released on $2,500 cash bail, saying his client only turned 18 three months ago and has no criminal record. He said $2,500 was significant and would ensure he shows up for court dates. Harpster said the concern was not if Janvier would return to court but community safety. He said this was a planned robbery and the suspect drove from Lowell to Nashua to commit it.

Nashua police worked with Lowell police, locating the Ford Flex vehicle allegedly used in the robbery. They contacted Janvier at his residence and police were allowed to search the premises, according to court paperwork. In what police described as a “voluntary interview” conducted with Nashua police, Janvier told detectives and U.S. Postal Service Investigation Service representatives that an unidentified man provided him and another young man with black BB guns and masks, then arranged for them to be transported to Nashua “to steal a city key from a Nashua mail carrier,” according to court documents. Janvier told detectives the unknown man who was accused of arranging the robbery said he would pay him $500 if he brought him the arrow key, according to reports.

After the robbery, according to court documents, Janvier provided the keys and received the cash.

Prosecutors said that although they were BB guns, they resembled firearms and created fear for the postal carrier who was robbed.

The judge agreed with the prosecutor and ordered that Janvier be held on preventative detention.

Janvier is being held at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections and will remain in custody until a second bail hearing, scheduled for April 23rd.
