Man, Reportedly Eluding Cops, Jumps In Nashua River And Drowns

Nashua fire and rescue teams and water rescue responders found the 28-year-old man in the river Friday. He was pronounced dead later.

NASHUA, NH — Nashua police saw a man who appeared to be eluding them in the area of Canal Street Friday.

The man ran and jumped into the Nashua River and went underwater, according to witnesses.

Nashua Fire Rescue was requested and responded with several firefighters and the dive team. The first responders put boats in the river while firefighters searched the banks of the river.

The man was located later underwater and unresponsive on the east side of the river. Crews pulled the man from the river, placed him in a rescue boat, and began performing CPR. He was brought up to a waiting AMR ambulance, where life-saving attempts were continued as he was transported to the Southern New Hampshire Medical Center.

Sgt. John Cinelli, a public information officer and communications division supervisor for the Nashua Police Department, said police were sent to the area for a welfare check call. When they arrived just past 5:30 p.m., the man, 28, started walking down the embankment toward the river. He jumped in and started running along the river in the shallow water.

The fire department found him in the river later. The man was not able to be revived and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
