NASHUA, NH — A Nashua man was arrested this week after police said he suffocated a woman. Alexander Matiz, 26, was charged with a host of crimes.

The assault happened Monday night at a city residence, according to Nashua police Captain James Testaverde.

"The victim stated that among other things, Matiz assaulted her by placing a pillow over her mouth and nose so she could not (breathe)," Testaverde said in a statement. The woman was hospitalized, Testaverde added.

Officers were responded to the residence after Matiz called them and said there had been a robbery. Testaverde said officers determined the robbery report was a ruse.

Matiz was charged with second-degree assault, criminal mischief and making a false report to law enforcement. He refused bail and was held at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections in Manchester pending an arraignment.
