Vigil Held Thursday For Fallen Police Officer Katherine Thyne

HUDSON, NH — A Virginia police officer will be memorialized Thursday at the New Hampshire high school she graduated from nearly seven years ago after being killed in the line of duty. Officer Katherine "Katie" Thyne of the Newport News VA Police Department, a mom and Navy veteran, was killed on Jan. 23 during a traffic stop in that community where she was dragged for about a block as a suspect attempted to escape the stop. Vernon Green II has been charged with homicide, evading and eluding, and possession of narcotics, according to press reports.

Thyne grew up in Dracut, Massachusetts, according to WBZ-TV, and Hudson, New Hampshire, and graduated from Alvirne High School in Hudson in 2013. She joined the Navy after that and served for five years, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. She joined the Navy Reserves in 2018 and the Newport News Police Department in June 2019

Thyne, according to her obituary, had just become engaged.

A GoFundMe.com site has been set up for Thyne's daughter, Reagan Grace, who is 2, and her former wife.

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, a vigil will be held at Alvirne High School. Donations will also be accepted for the family. Funeral services will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on East Merrimack Street in Lowell, MA, on Jan. 31.
