Ward 3 Alderman Diane Sheehan reports an incident at her home earlier today, when a man knocked and identified himself as a gas company employee, there to check a gas main.
She was not home at the time, but a sitter who was on duty turned the man away, then called Sheehan, who in turn called her gas company.
"They told me no employee should becoming to my door, and that there was no work going on in my area," Sheehan said.
She said the man was wearing khaki pants and a shirt with a name on it, but no company logo and no company truck in sight.
Sheehan was going to contact police next.
But she also wanted to get the word out as a reminder to everyone to be cautious about opening the door, and especially allowing anyone in your home who says they represent a utility company, unless they have proper ID.
"If it's not someone you were expecting, call the company before you let them in," Sheehan said.
