DURHAM, N.H. – A Durham man is in custody facing multiple felony charges after allegedly threatening a lawful deer hunter with a firearm on Monday.

Stephen Harriman, 56, of 181 Newmarket Road in Durham, was arrested by New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers on Monday. He has been charged with felony-level Criminal Threatening with a Firearm, felony-level Reckless Conduct with a Firearm, and a violation-level offense of Hunter Harassment.

The charges stem from an incident where Harriman is accused of using a firearm to intimidate and harass a local resident who was legally deer hunting on a neighboring property—the Lamprey River Wildlife Management Area, which is owned and managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

Due to the nature of the alleged conduct, prior interactions with Harriman, and to ensure the safety of all parties involved, law enforcement utilized the Strafford County Regional Tactical Operations Unit (SCRTOU) to safely take the suspect into custody. The SCRTOU is a specialized, highly trained unit comprising law enforcement and fire personnel from across Strafford County.

Conservation Officers investigating the complaint allege that Harriman used a firearm specifically to intimidate and harass the hunter during the event.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division extended its gratitude to numerous agencies for their collaborative effort in the arrest, including the Durham Police Department, Newmarket Police Department, University of New Hampshire Police Department, Durham Fire Department, McGregor Memorial EMS, Strafford County Regional Tactical Operations Unit, Belknap Special Operations Group, and the Seacoast Emergency Response Team.
