Driver Ejected, 4 People Hurt In I-93 Crash: Salem

SALEM, NH — Several people were transported to the hospital Monday evening after a vehicle crash on Interstate 93 in Salem. The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, on I-93 south, just south of Exit 1. That area of the interstate was closed for about an hour as authorities cleared the scene.

State Police say the accident was caused by three vehicles that were speeding and driving erratically. Among them was a blue 2006 Acura, driven by a 21-year-old man from Lawrence, Massachusetts, who lost control of the vehicle while changing lanes, according to police. The driver skidded into the breakdown lane, struck a guardrail and was ejected on impact, police say.

After striking the guardrail the Acura skidded back into the roadway and struck a second vehicle, a grey 2012 Toyota Sienna. The Toyota came to rest in the high=speed lane before coming to final rest in the middle lane, police say. The driver of the Toyota, a 56-year-old woman from Dracut, Massachusetts, and her elderly parents, were transported to Lawrence General Hospital for evaluations.

The 21-year-old driver of the Acura was transported to Lawrence General Hospital with serious injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening, police say.

According to police, debris and vehicle parts from the accident covered several lanes of I-93, and that portion of the interstate was shut down to traffic for about an hour while emergency staff worked on the scene.
