Mass. Man Charged with DWI Calls Police 'Terrorists'

Methuen, Mass., man led Salem Police on high-speed chase to Haverhill, Mass., before he was tasered and taken into custody.

A Massachusetts man who refused to stop for police and led them on a high-speed chase across the state line called police officers "terrorists" before he was tasered and taken into custody.

According to Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten, the suspect, Fred C. Riley, 33, of Methuen, Mass., was initially stopped by Salem Police Officer Mike Verrocchi on Pond Street, but then fled the scene by doing a U-turn, driving over a lawn and driving towards the police officer who had to jump out of the way.

Police located the vehicle heading into Haverhill and Methuen, Mass., and at one point Riley asked a Methuen Police dispatcher why Salem Police were following him into Massachusetts. Patten said Riley eventually pulled over at the intersection of Atkinson Street and Route 97, but then refused to obey police officers' commands to be taken into custody.

"He appeared to be intoxicated and out of sorts claiming the officers were 'terrorists' and that people are out to get him. Haverhill Police responded to took custody of him on Fugitive From Justice charges. Salem Police will be seeking charges and extradition on Felony Reckless Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Disobeying a PO, and Driving with Revoked License Plates," Patten wrote in the Salem Police press release.
