1 Charged In Manahawkin Check Washing Investigation: Police

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — A warrant was issued for the arrest of a Mays Landing man following a check washing investigation in Manahawkin, according to Stafford police.

On Jan. 2, Dubois & Associates on North Main Street reported a case of check washing that had occurred in previous months, police said.

The investigation revealed that a mailed check had been intercepted, altered and fraudulently cashed, police said. The modifications included changes to both the recipient's name and the check amount.

A warrant was issued for the arrest of Elijah M. Avant, 25, on March 6. He was charged with forgery, receiving stolen property and theft by deception.
