Jersey Shore Terrapin Hatchlings Get New Safe Home Up North

The hatchlings were discovered late in the season, so Liberty Science Center in Jersey City is taking care of them until spring.

LONG BEACH ISLAND, NJ — Five adorable terrapin hatchlings are staying up north for the winter.

The diamondback terrapin hatchlings were discovered on Long Beach Island, but too late in the season - they should have been safely nestled in their winter habitats. Now, through the colder months, the babies will be taken care of at Liberty Science Center until they can be released in the spring.

The rescue is thanks to Project Terrapin, a research and education initiative dedicated to protecting New Jersey’s diamondback terrapin populations. Through hands-on science, habitat conservation, and community engagement, Project Terrapin works to ensure the continued survival of this important coastal species.
