Man Driving 124 MPH Flees From Police In Manahawkin, Cops Say

The speeding BMW driver also ran a red light and was eventually caught at Hotel LBI in Ship Bottom, Stafford police said.

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — A man from North Carolina is accused of driving 124 mph and fleeing from police and when they tried to pull him over, Stafford police said.

Shortly before 11 p.m. on Dec. 12, police saw a black BMW sedan driving 124 mph west on Route 72 and the Causeway bridge, according to a news release.

An officer tried to pull the car over, but the driver kept speeding away, police said. He sped through a red light as well, police said.

Another officer saw the BMW speeding at 106 mph and also tried to pull the car over, but the driver still kept speeding away, police said.

The BMW continued to speed and turned east onto East Bay Avenue. Police stopped trying to pull the driver over at that point.

The driver had traveled east on Route 72 and onto Long Beach Island, police said.

At about 11:22 p.m. that night, Ship Bottom police told Stafford police the BMW was found parked and unoccupied in the Hotel LBI parking garage.

The driver was identified as Dashawn E. Capps, 26, police said. The Leansville, NC resident was taken into custody and charged with two counts of eluding.

Capps was released on a criminal complaint summons to appear in Ocean County Superior Court, and also was issued numerous traffic citations, police said.
