5 Tornadoes Confirmed In New Jersey: See Investigation Details

Here are the National Weather Service's findings on each tornado that hit the region last week:

NEW JERSEY — Investigators with the National Weather Service confirmed there were five tornadoes in New Jersey during the severe storms that hit the region on Thursday.

Meteorologists in Mount Holly and New York determined two tornadoes struck in Ocean County, two in Mercer County and one in Essex County.

The most severe of those tornadoes was on Long Beach Island, where an EF-2 tornado with peak winds of 115 miles per hour caused destruction in the High Bar Harbor section of Long Beach Township.

Here are the National Weather Service's findings on each tornado:

EF-2 tornado in Hopewell, Mercer County

This tornado traveled 6.4 miles beginning in New Hope, Pennsylvania before it crossed the Delaware River and entered Mercer County in the area of Washington Crossing, the weather service said. The survey team found tree damage after multiple reports of residential tree damage were received from Washington Crossing.

The EF-2 tornado with peak winds of 120 mph caused extensive tree damage near River Road on the New Jersey side of the Delaware River. Large hardwood and softwood trees were sheared and uprooted near Pleasant Valley Road.

The tornado continued southeastward and crossed through Baldpate Mountain, where hundreds of trees were snapped and damaged by winds, the weather service said.

The tornado path then crossed Washington Crossing State Park. Further damage was observed just southeast along Bear Tavern Road, where some of the largest downed trees were found.

EF-1 tornado in Windsor, Mercer County

The Windsor-Robbinsville Township tornado began on Route 130 just south of Windsor near the Assunpink Creek, according to the weather service.

The EF-1 tornado traveled 1.6 miles packing 105 mph winds, uprooting several hardwood trees along the highway near the Chestnut Montessori School. Intense tree damage was reported near the intersection of Perrineville Road and Voelbel Road where numerous trees were snapped and uprooted.

The National Weather Service said the tornado ended at a home on Perrineville Road where a final tree was uprooted.

EF-2 tornado on Long Beach Island, Ocean County

This tornado blew through Waretown and Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island with winds gusting up to 115 mph.

The EF-2 twister caused significant destruction in the High Bar Harbor section of Long Beach Island, damaging 35 homes and blowing the roofs off several houses.

Long Beach Township police provided medical assistance to three people and helped several residents evacuate their homes.

EF-1 tornado in Barnegat Township, Ocean County

The National Weather Service said another tornado touched down in Ocean County in the Cedar Bridge area of Barnegat Township.

The EF-1 twister was powered by winds of 100 to 105 mph.

Parts of County Route 532 and Route 72 were closed Thursday night through early Friday due to fallen trees and wires.

EF-0 tornado in Verona, Essex County

Further north, a tornado fueled by 65 mph winds briefly touched down in Essex County.

As it moved for less than a half mile, it knocked down several trees and severely damaged one home in its path, the weather service said.

The weather service also found there were five tornadoes in Eastern Pennsylvania during the severe storms that hit the region Thursday.

The most severe of those tornadoes was in Bensalem, where an EF-3 tornado with peak winds of 140 miles per hour caused widespread destruction. Read more: 5 Tornadoes Confirmed In Philly Region: See Investigation Details
