LITTLE EGG HARBOR, NJ — What's the secret to a long life? Viola Blum, a resident of The Terraces at Seacrest Village, has an idea - she just turned 100-years-old.

The centenarian was honored at a festive party attended by family, friends and the assisted living community’s staff. She moved to The Terraces at Seacrest Village in 2023.

Born on March 27, 1925, Blum grew up in Paterson, and was one of nine children. Prior to marrying her husband, John, in 1945, she was employed at a shirt factory in the “Silk City” – the nickname given to Paterson due to its large production of silk fabrics. Later in life, she worked as a mail sorter. Blum raised four children: three sons and one daughter. She has nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Her advice for a long and happy life? “Be honest, own up to your mistakes and always be yourself.” She attributes her longevity to staying active physically and mentally, and making the most of every moment. Her typical routine at The Terraces at Seacrest Village includes waking up early, taking daily walks and adhering to a healthy diet. She also enjoys participating in bingo, one of the many social events offered to residents.

Looking back on her long life, Blum says her favorite memories involve babysitting her nieces and nephews, and taking vacations with her son, Jan, and his family. She's seen lots of changes in her 100 years - but her favorite was the automatic washing machine.

“It made my housework so much easier,” she said.
