Barnegat Announces New Recycling Schedule For 2022

Starting the week of Jan. 3, Barnegat residents' recyclables will be picked up the day before their scheduled trash pickup date.

BARNEGAT, NJ — The new year will mark the start of a new recycling schedule in Barnegat Township.

Starting the week of Jan. 3, Barnegat residents’ recyclables will be picked up the day before their scheduled trash pickup date.

“If your trash is on Monday, your recycling is on Friday. If your trash is on Tuesday, recycling is on Monday. The day before the day of trash pickup,” said Township Administrator Martin Lisella on Tuesday at the township's committee meeting.

According to Lisella, it is more costly for the township to have both recycling and garbage trucks operating the same day.

Under the new system, workers will not have to check individual cans to see if they contain trash or recyclables, allowing them to empty the cans faster.

“It seems this system works more efficiently for both the town and the trash company,” Lisella said. “We’ve had a large increase in the cost of trash and recycling this year, so we’re trying to keep that cost down to a minimum.”

Nixle alerts and newspaper announcements will be sent out in January to remind residents of the new schedule.
