Barnegat Superintendent Talks Security In Wake Of Shootings

A Letter to the Editor from Superintendent Karen Wood

A Letter to the Editor from Barnegat Schools Superintendent Karen WoodDear Barnegat schools families,

I just wanted to take a moment to reach out to all of you in regards to yesterday’s horrific incident in Florida. Tragic events are always upsetting and often we question why these things have occurred and what we can do to prepare ourselves better for the future.

I wanted to reassure our school community that the Barnegat school district practices regular security protocols and procedures. We work closely with the Barnegat police department as well as other agencies to implement safety procedures on a regular basis. However, that does not stop us from seeking to improve our regular practices.

This morning, I reminded all staff to adhere to regular security procedures. In addition the Barnegat Police Department was more visible in our schools today than ever. I am grateful for their support.

When I spoke with the staff this morning, I reminded them that “teachable moments” occur in the classroom all the time and that children may have had questions in regards to the events in Florida. Children will have questions at home as well and we encourage you to have conversations with your children, where appropriate, regarding the tragedy.
