Bill Increase In Store For Atlantic City Electric Customers: BPU
Residential rates are expected to go up by more than 17 percent in June, according to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.
SOUTH JERSEY — Atlantic City Electric customers will see another bill hike of more than 17 percent in June, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) said Wednesday.
This will result in an extra $28.02 per month on customer's bills, the BPU said, initially reported by the Press of Atlantic City.
The hike comes from the results of New Jersey's annual Basic Generation Service (BGS) auction.

“This week’s BGS auction results are the culmination of several issues: rapidly increasing demand for electricity, coupled with limited supply growth due to lagging new generation interconnection, and flawed market dynamics in the PJM region,” said Christine Guhl-Sadovy, President of the NJBPU. “PJM’s recent capacity auction results are the main driver of these increases. The Murphy Administration will continue to aggressively push and hold PJM accountable to address rising costs by expediting interconnection and implementing additional market reforms, all of which will help drive down costs for ratepayers which is a priority for the BPU.”
The BGS auction determines, in part, the cost of electricity for most New Jersey residents and many businesses for a 12-month period starting June 1, 2025. The NJBPU’s authority over the auction is limited to certifying the results as consistent with market trends and does not extend to influence pricing, according to a BPU news release.

Atlantic City Electric is also seeking a separate 8 percent rate hike request; the BPU will vote on this at a public meeting in April. The company said that hike will provide upgrades to their services and includes customer support efforts.
Earlier this month, Atlantic City Electric announced new measures to help customers save money on their bills. This includes no late payment fees for January and February 2025, suspensions of disconnections for non-payments in February 2025 and waiving deposit requirements for customers seeking to restore service after disconnection.
