Dangerous Ocean Conditions On Long Beach Island Today

Life-threatening conditions exist, waves of 9 feet expected, National Weather Service says

LONG BEACH ISLAND, NJ - Don't even think about swimming.

There's a high risk of rip currents today. Anyone who goes in the water faces "dangerous and potentially life threatening conditions," the National Weather Service says.

And if that's not enough of a convincer, waves of 9 feet, with easterly swells of 9 feet are expected. The ocean water temperature is 76 degrees, higher than the air temperature, which will be in the upper 60s. The NWS has also issued a coastal flood warning.

Although several beaches are technically still guarded, chances are you will not be allowed to go in. The Beach Haven Beach Patrol has already forbidden swimming.

"People visiting the beaches should stay out of the high surf," the NWS says.

"Extremely dangerous ocean conditions all week," the Harvey Cedars Beach Patrol Facebook page states. "Please stay out of the water & do not put first responders lives in danger."

Skies will be cloudy and rain is expected. Winds will be from the east at a brisk 20 to 25 miles per hour. There is no lightning threat

The ultraviolet index is a 2, which the NWS considers low, so don't expect to work on your tan.

High tide at Barnegat Inlet arrived at 7:54 a.m. Low tide will roll in at 2:13 p.m., followed by another high tide at 8:14 p.m.
