Corn, Pork Roll, Blueberries Inspire NJ-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
Pork and produce are the stars of this Long Beach Island ice cream spot's latest summer creation, called "The Jerz."

BEACH HAVEN, NJ — New Jersey is known for a few things —food-wise, we mean.
In Beach Haven, Megan Kilroy of The WooHoo combined three homegrown staples to write a "love letter" to the Garden State. She delivered that love letter on top of an ice cream cone.
"The Jerz" features a sweet corn ice cream base with fresh blueberry swirl, and pork roll candied in brown sugar.

"Jersey's known for a lot of foods and that's where I came up with it," said Kilroy. "Right now is the perfect timing for blueberries," she added.

Kilroy co-owns the business with her husband Shaun, and is the creative engine driving all the WooHoo's new flavors.

They've been in business eight years, selling hot and cold food and drinks as well as scoops and sundaes at their shop on Long Beach Island.
Funky (and fun) flavor fusions are nothing new on the ice cream menu at The WooHoo.
"Usually we have something every summer," said Kilroy. "We've done the Chowderfest, so we've done a clam chowder ice cream; last year we did a lobster roll ice cream. We've done a spicy ice cream where you've had to sign a waiver. We've done a bunch of different things."
But "The Jerz," Kilroy says, is definitely one people want to try — and they must like it, because she needs to make more already. The process of figuring out how to do so, she said, was not too tough.
"I know how to do the corn base already, because I kind of did that with the clam chowder one, so it's a similar base. And then I have my blueberries that I reduce down into a syrup, and caramelize the pork roll (with brown sugar)."

Even before The WooHoo opened, Kilroy said she would make ice cream for her coworkers and bring it in at the end of the week for "Flavor Friday."
The Kilroys are in their eighth year in business. The WooHoo also has smoothies, coffee, and food — like burgers, salads, hot dogs, sandwiches, and fries. Vegetarian and vegan options are available for both food and ice cream, such as falafel sandwiches and vegan "nugs." They also offer ice cream making classes, and serve breakfast most days.
Kilroy said The Jerz is only available at the WooHoo right now. She said Neptune Market in Harvey Cedars should have some "in a week or so."
The WooHoo is located at 211 South Bay Avenue, Beach Haven NJ 08008. Their phone number is 609-492-5433.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday-Sunday.
