Longtime Jersey Shore Race Canceled, But Medals Still Given

LONG BEACH TWP., NJ — A long-running race at the Jersey Shore that was scheduled for this past Sunday had to be canceled due to the nor'easter.

It's only the third time in the LBI 18 Mile Run's 53-year history that a cancellation has been necessary, organizers said.

"The safety of our runners, volunteers, first responders, and the community is our absolute top priority," organizers said in announcing the cancellation. "After extensive coordination with local and regional emergency management, law enforcement, and meteorologists, it is clear that the storm conditions will make a safe and successful event logistically impossible."

Refunds will not be given due to the run's policy. But would-be participants will still be given their official race packet, including a commemorative medal. Runners will also get a discount towards next year's race.

"We know how much time and training you’ve invested," organizers said. "This is more than just a race; it’s a tradition that defines our community, and canceling the event after 53 years weighs heavily on all of us."

The LBI 18 Mile Run and 12K Run/Fun Walk spans the island, with runners starting in Holgate and heading to the Barnegat Lighthouse. The shorter option starts in the same location but finishes across from St. Francis Community Center.

"Thank you for your understanding," organizers said. "We look forward to seeing you at the start line next year."
