Some Lagoons in Beach Haven West Are Contaminated - Officials Are Trying To Determine The Source

Don't swim in the lagoons and report any dead fish or birds.

Stafford Township officials are warning residents in the Beach Haven West community not to swim in the lagoons until they determine the source of contamination, according to the township website.

The source and type of the contamination is unknown at this time.

"But there is clear evidence that it is highly toxic to wildlife as well as fish and other indigenous creature," according to the post.

Stafford officials say the problem was found in the Village Harbor section, but have advised no swimming in any Beach Haven West lagoon.

"We are also requesting that all residents be extremely vigilant with regards to the waterways and inform the township of any incidences of fish kill or sick bird."

The township has contacted the state Department of Environmental Protection, the DEP's Division of Fish and Wildlife and the Ocean County Health Department to determine the cause and impact of the contamination.

"Please understand we are making every effort to determine what has happened and to keep the residents of Beach Haven West informed as we gain additional information," the post states.
