Teen Driver Killed After Hitting Pole, Flipping Truck In Manahawkin: Police
The 17-year-old driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel prior to the early Tuesday crash, Stafford police said.
MANAHAWKIN, NJ — A 17-year-old driver died early Tuesday after possibly falling asleep at the wheel of his pickup truck and crashing into a pole, Stafford police said.
Police were called to the traffic signal at Mermaid Drive and Route 72 at about 1:35 a.m. Sept. 30 for the report of a male possibly asleep at the wheel, according to a news release.
While on their way to the intersection, officers saw an overturned pickup truck, resembling the caller's description, on Route 72 eastbound at Nautilus Drive.

The 2005 Ford Ranger appeared to have collided with a utility pole then rolled over where it came to rest upside down, police said.
The teen driver was entrapped in the truck, police said. He died from his injuries at the scene. Family has been notified.

"The Stafford Township Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the teenage driver during this painful time," police said.
As of Tuesday morning, NJDOT and the utility companies are on scene working to repair the damaged infrastructure. The intersection has been temporarily modified to allow traffic to continue to flow; however, it is recommended to take an alternate route if possible, police said.
