Three Manahawkin Students Named As National Merit Scholarship Finalists

Two are from MATES and one is from Southern Regional High School

Being named as a 2018 National Merit Scholarship Finalist is no easy task. Less than one percent of all students in high schools in the United States make the list.

Three of them are from Manahawkin.

Brianna L. Hoegler and Alexander D. McWeeney are students at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science.

All semifinalists are eligible to receive 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth $33 million.

Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier performance on the PSAT.

Roughly 15,000 of the 16,000 semifinalists are expected to be named finalists. Three types of scholarship awards will be offered next year: National Merit $2,500 scholarships, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships.

Scholarship winners will be announced in spring 2018.
