BARNEGAT LIGHT, NJ — A needlefish is the likely cause of the leg injury a Jersey Shore swimmer received over the weekend, though some speculated that it had been a shark attack. But what is a needlefish?

The Atlantic needlefish is a long and thin creature, with a lengthy jaw filled with sharp teeth. It grows up to 24 inches, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Needlefish spend a lot of time near the surface and often jump out of the water to chase small fish.

It's often during this that needlefish cause injury to humans, even though they are not aggressive. They are not venomous but they are fast: According to the Ocean Conservancy, a needlefish can move up to 40 mph, often jumping over small boats - where they occasionally stab boaters, fishermen, swimmers and more. While these cases are accidental, they can cause serious injuries.

Some of these injuries could even be life-threatening. A 2024 report on needlefish impalement said that depending on where the penetration happens, such as the neck or face, the attack is more likely to be fatal.
