WWII Vet Celebrates 100th Birthday In Southern Ocean
The new centenarian celebrated his birthday surrounded by loved ones, government officials and the staff of Seacrest in Little Egg Harbor.

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, NJ — What's the secret to staying young? A positive, happy-go-lucky spirit is key, according to George S., a resident of Seacrest Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center who recently celebrated his 100th birthday.
The highly decorated World War II Navy veteran celebrated his birthday in May surrounded by friends, family, government officials and Seacrest staff.
Assemblyman Gregory Myhre presented George with a plaque during the festivities and was joined by many other local dignitaries. Those included Little Egg Harbor’s Mayor Dan Maxwell, Deputy Mayor Ken Laney, Committeeman Blaise Scibetta and Tuckerton Mayor Susan Marshall, along with Assemblyman Brian Rumpf and American Legion Commander Charles “Andy” Jackson.

“George is one of a kind; he has always been dedicated to his family and brings the sunshine everywhere he goes. It was our pleasure to host his milestone birthday celebration. We are so thankful to everyone for joining us in honoring George on his special day,” said Jacqueline Phillips, Seacrest Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center.
The new centenarian was born in Pennsylvania in 1925. George enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and spent three years as a merchant marine and gunner during WWII. Throughout his Navy career, George served on a number of vessels, including the SS Gloria, SS Henry Watterson, SS Santa Paula, SS Thomas P. Beal and SS John A. Donald. He received numerous honors for his active duty, including the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

George was married to the love of his life Terry for more than 60 years. Together, they have three children, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He spent 30 years as a brewmaster at Rheingold, Schaefer and Stroh, along with other breweries.
