Why are you seeking election for the Bernards Township Committee?
My wife and I moved here 26 years ago and fell in love with the town. In those 26 years we raised two kids and created a wonderful life. I’m running for Bernards Township Committee to ensure that the town remains the jewel of central NJ by preserving its charm and helping to keep it affordable.
The Committee recently approved its fourth-round affordable housing plan that includes housing for families, seniors, and the developmentally disabled. What do you think of this plan?
This issue arises every 10 years, and I think the Committee might have found a better solution if the affordable housing mandate was addressed earlier and with much more transparency. We need to be more proactive and transparent when addressing these challenges, as they have a big impact on our infrastructure, schools and services.
Crime and resources for police have been a topic of discussion in the Township. How do you feel about the Township's support of the police department?
I can’t say enough positive things about our police department. They are appreciated and supported by the residents of the town. However, like most small-town police departments, they can always use more resources. If I am fortunate enough to be elected, I believe we should be open to considering other funding sources. Safety is a high priority.
The Committee approved a budget with a 3.76 percent increase over last year. How do you feel about the Township's handling of the budget and financing?
I believe the professionals who run our town, including our chief financial officer, do a wonderful job. Having said that, the Committee needs to become more proactive in addressing issues.,The Township Committee needs to take the lead, like any good board of directors does, to see that money is spent efficiently and tax increases can be blunted. I pay taxes here, so I’ll work to keep as much money in my pocket as possible!
What other issues do you feel need to be tackled in the Township?
I think we need to explore in greater detail the Highlands project, as it ensures preservation of clean water and open spaces and may lower our affordable housing requirements. I also think that we need to be very focused on maintaining our fabulous parks and ensuring that our downtown becomes even more pedestrian and business-friendly.
What sets you apart from the challenging candidates?
I am a centrist, fiscally conservative, former independent running as a Democrat. I believe my opponents are good, decent people, I just have a very different view of the world.
Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your campaign?
When I was young, I was a registered Republican. As I matured, I began to see the world differently. I understood that not everyone stands at the same starting line in life. I believe everyone should be given a chance to succeed. I believe good decisions and hard work lead to positive outcomes. I’m an ex-Wall Street guy who believes that everyone is responsible for not only themselves but for those around us who could use a hand.
