Owner Finds Missing Jewelry in Bernards 'Burglary'

A burglary of jewelry reported last Thursday on South Alward Avenue in Basking Ridge turned out not to be a burglary after all when the missing items were found a week later, Bernards Township Police said at about 2 p.m.

"The victim called today to say she found all the missing jewelry because she misplaced them," Police Lt. Michael Voorhees said on Thursday afternoon.

Last Thursday morning, police had said they were investigating a report of stolen jewelry during a reported burglary on South Alward Avenue at about 9 a.m. on Thursday, when the homeowner reportedly left the home's door unlocked while walking her dog.

As a result of the report, K-9 dogs were called in from the nearby police department in Hillsborough, and police reportedly were knocking on doors later that morning asking if neighbors had seen anything suspicious.

At that time, the alleged burglar was beleived to have walked into the house on South Alward Avenue and removed jewelry from the master bedroom.

He said that police called in K-9 unit from Hillsborough police department to assist in the investigation.

Even so, Bernards and Bernardsville police departments had previously issued a joint alert to residents in August to be careful to lock doors to prevent break-ins and burglaries, as reported in past several months.
