New Housing Complex to Give Vets Sense of Community, Home
Valley Brook Village in Lyons breaks from traditional institutional-like housing available to low-income veterans.

Valley Brook Village -- a three-building complex that just opened in Lyons -- is the first rental housing project of its kind to offer low-income veterans a neighborhood-like setting as opposed to traditional dorm-like units.
The 62 one- and two-bedroom apartments are situated on a cul de sac down the road from the VA Medical Center, according to NJ.com, and although it's affiliated with the center, the Village is run as a public-private enterprise.
The complex is a pedestrian-friendly village atmosphere that was designed to promote a sense of community in a non-institutional setting. It was funded by federal and state subsidies including rental subsidies and funding for supportive services.
