BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The Ridge High School Varsity Field Hockey team picked up another key win on Saturday, October 11, defeating the Caldwell Chiefs 2–0 in an away matchup.

The Red Devils scored both goals in the second quarter and held their lead for the remainder of the game, earning their second shutout of the season. Senior co-captain Olivia Marchelli (#7) and sophomore Grace Geary (#12) each found the back of the cage, giving Ridge the edge they needed to stay in control.

Head Coach Kimberly Clark praised the team’s unity and focus.

“It was an excellent team effort — everyone did their job,” said Clark. “From our starting lineup to the girls coming off the bench and those who challenge them every day in practice… everyone was locked in.”

A few key adjustments contributed to Ridge’s strong showing. Freshman Lola Marchelli stepped into the demanding center mid position, while Sara Raustad took advantage of open space on the forward line. On defense, Sophie McDonnell and Maddie Garcia helped anchor the backfield and secure the shutout.

“We made some changes to our lineup structure, and Lola adjusted really well to the high-pressure position of center mid,” Clark explained. “That freed up Sara to really use her speed up front. I was also really impressed with Sophie and Maddie leading the defense.”

Caldwell came out in the second half with tactical changes, pressing Ridge with two high attackers. But the Red Devils adjusted quickly and dominated possession down the stretch.

“We were caught on our heels coming out of the half, but we adjusted our press and the girls settled in and kept us on attack,” said Clark. “Although we didn’t score in the second half, we had a plethora of scoring opportunities.”

The win lifted team spirits and set the tone heading into a competitive week ahead.

“Although it was only 10 a.m., the energy on the bus was electric,” Clark added. “The singing and dancing — and talk of team bagels — had everyone on cloud nine!”

Next up, Ridge travels to face the North Hunterdon Lions on Monday before opening county tournament play on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Bridgewater-Raritan.
