Somerset Hills YMCA Launches Free Veterans Wellness Program

Empowering local veterans and their families through health, wellness, and community

Somerset Hills YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, has successfully launched a Veterans Wellness Program. This free 12-week initiative, which ran from April through June, provided weekly in-person exercise sessions and virtual wellness discussions focused on supporting the mind, body, and spirit of those who have served.

Open to active-duty military, veterans, and their spouses or partners, the Veterans Wellness Program offered participants full access to Y Wellness programs, a family membership during the program, and an additional six-month individual adult membership upon successful completion.
Facilitated by Liz Stoddard and Tracey Mezours, the program created a supportive space for military families to connect, heal, and thrive. “I’ve worked with veterans from all branches of service,” said Liz Stoddard, Group Exercise Instructor at Somerset Hills YMCA. “Many are looking not just to return to wellness routines, but to regain a sense of camaraderie. This program offers both. Graduates leave with new friendships and lasting wellness tools that enrich their lives well beyond the program.”

Originally founded in 2015 at the Doylestown YMCA in Bucks County, PA, the Veterans Wellness Program was designed to offer community and support for veterans and their families. Somerset Hills YMCA’s recent launch served nearly 30 local veterans and their loved ones.

“Since joining this fantastic program, I feel rejuvenated and energized,” shared George Martin, a 79-year-old Army veteran and retired executive from Dun & Bradstreet. “I visit the Y at least four times a week. Working with our exceptional trainer Liz has helped me lose 15 pounds and feel stronger every day. She challenges us with humor, music, and genuine dedication.”

On July 15, Somerset Hills YMCA hosted a graduation celebration led by Senior Wellness Director Lisa Pensabene, her team, and fellow Y staff to recognize the accomplishments of program participants. Friends and family joined in the festivities, which included superlatives, certificates of completion, and a shared dinner and dessert. Program facilitators Liz and Tracey shared heartfelt memories from their time with participants, making it a joyful and memorable evening and truly a moment worth celebrating!
