Belleville High Students Urge Peers to Drive Smarter

Students at Belleville High School are participating in the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey’s third Annual “U Got Brains Champion Schools Program” – a contest challenging New Jersey high school students and teachers to develop interactive campaigns demonstrating the message that keeping New Jersey’s roads safe is everyone’s responsibility. 

The Belleville High School Safety Team, FCCLA, the CTE Department, Belleville Fire Department and Belleville Police Department are working together on the public safety campaign. The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey and New Jersey Manufactures Insurance Group along with New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, and the Allstate Foundation are sponsoring this educational program.

S.T.O.M.P. (Students Taking Out Measures of Prevention) Out Distractive Driving will be the focus of Belleville’s education campaign. Teen drivers are distracted by their passengers and pressured by peers to drive unsafely.  Don’t let someone bully you into breaking the law.

At the high school our program for safer streets began with the high school students taking a distracted driving survey. The entire student body is currently participating in a classroom door-decorating contest. Classes will research, design and decorate their doors with information that focuses on Stomping out Distracted Driving and Stopping Peer Pressure from both the driver’s and the passengers’ points of view.  

We want to be a key component in the development of safe young drivers. Please watch for updates on our progress and the student survey results as our “S.T.O.M.P.ing” progresses. The contest runs from through May with all participating schools receiving awards.  The grand prize is a driving simulator donated by New Jersey Manufactures Insurance Company (NJM).
