Meet Your Jaycees Distinguished Service Award Winners: Public Health and Safety Award

Nutley's Volunteer Fire Chief Phil Nicolette distinguished himself with longtime commitment to township, work during Hurricane Sandy.

Public Health and Safety Award

The Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in the field of Public Health and Safety is volunteer firefighter Phil Nicolette. 

Born in Kearny, Phil Nicolette moved to Nutley 33 years ago and immediately joined the Nutley Fire Department as a volunteer. He worked his way through the ranks in the department with Hose Company #1; he was named Assistant Chief in 1991 under then Public Safety Commissioner John Kelly. In March 2009, he was sworn in as Nutley's Volunteer Fire Chief.

Nicolette is an active coordinator with the Nutley Office of Emergency Management. The position of fire chief is a voluntary, non-salaried position in Nutley.

Chief Nicolette worked for and was successful in receiving a federal grant which will bring new firefighting apparatus to Nutley within the next few months. He is also a member of the South Bergen Fire Chiefs Association and the New Jersey State Fire Chefs Association.
      
Since 2000, Nicolette has served the Nutley Board of Education as its manager of buildings and grounds. During Hurricane Sandy, Nicolette served countless hours managing and addressing issues involving the numerous school facilities.

Married to Annmarie, Chief Nicolette is the father of Jenna Ostroman and her husband Thomas of Toms River, Daniel and his wife Stefanie of Lyndhurst, and Captain Thomas Nicolette of the Nutley Fire Department and his wife Rachel. 

The Chief's proudest and happiest moments are spent with his five grandchildren, Matty, Chase, Andrew, Dominic and Dani Rose.
