Nutley Holds Crayon Recycling Drive Throughout March

National crayon day is at the end of the month. To celebrate, Nutley officials are asking residents to draw outside the lines.

Township Commissioner Dr. Joseph Scarpelli announced that the township is holding a crayon recycling initiative in pre-schools in honor of National Crayon Day, March 31. The drive concludes April 5.

“This program is a great way to introduce the concept of recycling to our youngsters,” Commissioner Scarpelli said in a press release. “My goal is to get the youth of our community to act as recycling rangers by recycling on a regular basis, as well as reminding the adults around them to recycle.”

The commissioner said creative recycling efforts spark conversation about how items can be reused or repurposed, ultimately keeping those items out of our landfills.

Crayons collected during the drive will be shipped to Crazy Crayons, a crayon recycling organization in the mid-west that melt down, re-shap and reuse the crayon material for to creatively shaped crayons sold in specialty gift shops.

The Township will receive a recycling summary reportthat will be submitted to the state for recycling credit.
