Nutley: Schools Closed this Week, Refrigeration for Medicines Offered

Info on closed streets and more in wake of epic storm

Nutley officials have announced that school will be closed at least through the end of the week and that weekend activities, including the administration of the SAT tests, are cancelled. School officials are consulting the Education Testing Service to reschedule testing.

Residents are reminded to call 9-1-1 for true emergencies only. For non-emergencies:

Call 973-932-3245 or 973-932-2372 for general information from 8 am to 11 pm until Monday, Nov. 5. For important but non-emergency numbers, call 973-932-2353 or 973-932-3468. These numbers will be monitored around the clock.

The township’s public affairs office can also provide refrigeration for medications at 149 Chestnut St. Residents are also reminded they can go in person to the police or fire departments, 228 Chestnut St., for assistance.

Public works commissioner Pete Scarpelli said that as of Wednesday afternoon, a man suffered minor injuries after falling from his roof but that no other injuries have been reported.

Officials also said power has been restored to approximately half the township. Officials are awaiting the arrival of PSEG crews to restore power to the rest of Nutley, but with widespread outages, it is not known precisely when electricity will come back.

Scarpelli also said the DPW has cleared all the trees from roads they’re able to. The remaining downed trees are entangled by power lines which require PSEG crews.

Garbage collection for apartment buildings ONLY resumes Thursday. Normal pickup resumes Friday. Recyclig is cancelled.

Blocked or closed streets:

As of Wednesday afternoon, the following streets or intersections were closed to vehicular traffic for downed trees and power lines: Belleville Avenue and Willard Street; motorists traveling north on Willard will be redirected to the west. Franklin Avenue from Clara Maass Hospital to the Newark line is closed. At the intersection of Franklin and Belleville avenues, all motorists are being forced to make right turns regardless of the direction they approach from.

A small section of Washington Avenue is closed between King and Hancox. Mill Street between Union and Franklin avenues is closed. A small section of Union Street near King Street was closed.
