Belleville Police Detective Again Voted President of State PBA

Anthony Wieners, a longtime Belleville police detective, last week was elected to another term as president of the state Police Benevolent Association, Nj.com reported Monday. Wieners, a 32-year veteran of the Belleville force, has been president of the PBA since 2008. His latest term as head of the 33,000-member union is three years. 

Nutley Steps Up to Help Kids Find Sports Equipment

With sports equipment a big expense for many families, Nutley has stepped up the township’s SEEK, or Sports Equipment Encourages Kid program to encourage residents to recycle  “gently used” sports equipment for parents’ student athletes, according to Commissioner Mauro Tucci, director of the department of parks and recreation.

Commissioner Rogers: Dioxin Testing on the Passaic River Does Not Pose A Health Risk

Following a meeting with  Feb. 11, met with representatives of the EPA, the Director of the Essex Regional Health Commission, and representatives of the Nutley Board of Education about the dioxin testing on the Passaic River, Nutley Commissioner  Steven Rogers said he was comfortable with the direction that the testing would take. Commissioner Rogers said that the EPA and Sandy Harris, the Director of the Essex Regional Health Commission would take the lead on reviewing and disseminating testing results and other information to Nutley.  He added that the Health Department would be in close contact with the Nutley Board of Education as testing and other work being completed on the Passaic River is in progress.

Armed Guards Stationed Outside Belleville Schools

In reaction to the Newtown school shootings, the Belleville Board of Education have commissioned armed security officers to guard the front doors of Belleville public school. At Monday night's school board meeting, school officials told resident that the armed security guards were placed at the schools on Feb. 4. In addition, a special security company is completing a comprehensive audit of all the schools and will recommend improvement to security measures, including video cameras, phone systems and door locks, school officials said.

Injured Tree Worker Brought to Hospital

Belleville police, fire and ambulances responded to an accident reported at the intersection of Continental and Franklin Aves. near a Bank of America location in Belleville. Reports on emergency communications indicated that a worker in a tree had had sustained injuries. Police say the tree was being taken down by the workers when a branch snapped causing the worker to fall. The worker was taken to University Hospital.
