Recycling pays off.

"Out of the 33 towns in Ocean County, Berkeley was the sixth highest in revenue generated," the mayor said.

Berkeley residents recycled 2,210 tons, up 25 percent from just three years ago. For every ton recycled, the township received $13.88.

The township saves $81 in tipping fees at the Ocean County Landfill for each ton that's recycled.

"In return we receive 50 percent of the profits from the county in recycling revenue," Amato said. "Let’s all pitch in and do our part to recycle, reduce land fill costs and generate additional revenue.I know as a community we can do better."

Recycling got easier a few years ago when the township converted to single stream recycling. Bottles, cans, newspaper, mixed paper and cardboard can all go in the same container now.
