Berkeley Police Charge Toms River Man With Aggravated Assault
Michael A. Mele, 26, tried to punch and spit on officers at police headquarters, police chief says

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP - Berkeley police recently charged a Toms River man with aggravated assault after he attacked a woman in the 900 block of Monmouth Avenue recently, Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele said.
Patrolman Michael Bulwinski and Patrolman Michael Zilavetz responded to the scene and discovered that Michael A. Mele, 26, had seriously injured the woman, then fled the scene on foot in the July 23 incident, the chief said.
Bulwinski found Mele emerging from a wooded area near Louis Avenue and arrested him. He was taken to police headquarters, where he tried to punch and spit on the officers, DiMichele said.

He was charged with aggravated assault and throwing bodily fluid at police officers. Police issued a criminal warrant and Mele was taken to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, where he was held without bail, the chief said.
