Choppy Surf, Moderate Rip Current Risk For Ocean County Beaches

Skies will be mostly sunny, winds will pick up in the afternoon, National Weather Service says

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ - There's a moderate rip current risk and some rough surf ahead for Ocean County beaches today.

So make sure you always swim on a guarded beach and check with local beach patrols for any problem areas. Never swim on an unguarded beach and never swim alone or at night. Too many people have already died on ocean beaches this summer. Don't add your name to the list. Always have a flotation device with you in the water.

Halfway through the summer season, the Beach Haven Beach Patrol has already made 300 rescues, primarily due to the large number of rip currents, according to the patrol's Facebook page.

"The sheer volume of people coming to Beach Haven means that, according to the law of averages; something will go wrong," the post states.

Waves today will be from 3 to 5 feet high, with southerly swells of around 4 feet. The ocean water temperature is 76 degrees, although that may vary from beach to beach.

The National Weather Service is calling for mostly sunny skies, with highs in the lower 80s. Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour.

The ultraviolet index is a 9, which the NWS considers very high. So slather on the sunscreen or you'll be sure to burn.

Low tide at Barnegat Inlet arrived at 6:02 a.m. High tide will roll in at 12:05 p.m., followed by another low tide at 6:20 p.m.

Have a good day and be careful out there!
