Little League Baseball Field To Be Renamed After Leiter Family

The baseball field will be officially dedicated at 5:30 p.m. on Friday

BAYVILLE, NJ - Mention the name "Leiter" in Berkeley Township and what's the first word that comes to mind?

Baseball.

"All five Leiter sons played for the Berkeley Township Little League, from 1967 through 1982, totaling sixteen consecutive seasons a Leiter played baseball on a baseball field in Berkeley Township," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. "The Leiter family has donated countless hours and has provided financial support to improve and continue Little League within the township."

Township and Little League officials will hold a dedication ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 13 at the Little League Complex at 43 Moorage Avenue to rename the baseball field from Leiter Field to “Leiter Baseball Park,” in recognition of the family's continuing contributions to the league.

Former major league pitcher Al Leiter - who made a $100,000 donation to the league back in 1998 -has been working with league officials and the township to transform the field into a state-of-the-art baseball facility.

The Leiter Family has made another contribution to the league, and the township provided the architecture and engineering designs along with some additional safety bleachers and dugout benches.

"We will also be providing some additional fencing as well," the mayor said. The construction is well underway with new dugouts, concrete walkways and a two story scorers' booth with equipment room."
